Sejarah CB Series

 

 

          Ada puluhan seri dan ribuan tipe motor yang diproduksi Honda telah menyebar ke seluruh dunia.  Dari puluhan tipe tersebut, seri CB (CB Series) merupakan seri yang cukup banyak diproduksi dari segi cakupan maupun kuantitasnya.  Banyak model CB masih dijual sebagai komuter dan motor jelajah.  Semua seri CB memiliki mesin inline.  Beberapa tipe CB diproduksi untuk kegunaan balap, contohnya CB 50 yang populer di balap motor tua dan CB 750 yang memenangi balapan di Amerika hingga menjadi titik tonggak penyebaran Honda ke seluruh dunia.
Tidak semua tipe CB masuk ke setiap negara.  Masing-masing negara mempunyai “cabang perusahaan” yang akan menentukan tipe bagaimana yang sesuai dengan kultur negara tersebut.  Di Amerika misalnya, CB 750 laris manis bak kacang goreng dan hampir tidak mengenal CB 100, sebaliknya di Indonesia CB 100 lebih laku dijual daripada CB 750.
Berikut ini garis besar kronologi produksi Honda CB :

1959
Honda mengeluarkan CB72 Hawk dengan kapasitas 250 cc, 4 kecepatan.
1961
Honda model sport baru CB77 Super Hawk (305 cc).
1965
 

          Honda ingin merambah pasar baru dengan meluncurkan mesin besar CB Twin 450 cc yang bisa mencapai 104 mph.  Honda CB450 mempunyai engine 445cc, air cooled, DOHC, 4 valves, paralel twin, transmisi 4 kecepatan berpenggerak rantai, sasis steel twin craddle, suspensi teleskopik depan dan belakang twin shocks.   Mampu mengeluarkan power sebesar 43HP pada 8500 RPM.   Rem depan dan belakang menggunakan tromol.   Honda ini disebut juga Black Bomber.  Disebut black karena body-nya hitam termasuk tankinya yang dilengkapi aksesoris krom pada kedua sisinya.  Selain itu, bahasa iklan Honda ini di Inggris adalah “Meet the big black bomber – The biggest beefiest touring twin from Japan…!”.  Motor ini adalah motor kecepatan Jepang pertama yang mengubah opini masyarakat saat itu

1968
Honda menghentikan produksi pengembangan CB72 dan CB77 untuk memulai produksi motor sport CB350 dan CB250 (mampu mencapai 106 mph).

1969
Di awal tahun di Tokyo Motor Show, Honda mengeluarkan sebuah motor bersejarah CB 750 Four setelah berbulan-bulan beredar rumor tentang motor tersebut.  Motor tersebut mendapatkan emas pada tahun ini.
1970
Pada bulan Maret 1970, Dick “Bugsy” Mann seorang pilot Amerika terkenal menggunakan CB 750 berhasil memenangi kejuaraan Daytona International Speedway di Amerika Serikat pada kelas 200 mil.  Pada saat itu, di Amerika ada pepatah bahwa barang siapa produsen motor memenangkan kejuaraan tersebut pada hari Minggu, maka pada hari Senin sudah bisa menjual produk tersebut.  Kemenangan tersebut merupakan titik balik kemajuan perusahaan Honda.  Ratusan ribu CB 750 kemudian berhasil dilempar di pasaran Amerika dan dunia.
1971
Honda mengeluarkan CB 500 Four. 1972
 

 

 

Honda memperkenalkan CB 350 Four.
1973
Honda yang sebenarnya kurang suka dengan kebisingan yang dihasilkan oleh motor 2 tak, terpaksa mengeluarkan CR250 untuk bisa berkompetisi dan terbukti Gary Jones memenangkan AMA Motocross Championship di tahun pertama.  Soichiro Honda pensiun tapi masih menjadi anggota dewan direksi.
1974
Honda memproduksi CB 50 dengan mesin horisontal 5 percepatan.
1975
Honda menyajikan motor jalanan CB 400 Four dengan knalpot yang ramah polusi suara yaitu 4 knalpot 

 

 

 

 

 

menjadi satu di sisi kanan motor.
1976
Honda CB 750 A berinovasi lagi dengan sepeda motor pertama bertransmisi otomatis.
1979
Meluncurkan Honda CBX luar biasa, sebuah motor sport super model 6 silinder bermesin 1047 cc.
